How to Download Instagram Messages
Short answer
Use Accounts Center to create an export to your device, select the Instagram profile and Messages, then choose a date range and JSON or HTML. Meta may take up to 30 days to prepare it, and the download remains available for four days. Unsent messages are not included. Preserve the ZIP before converting it.

Instagram messages are downloaded through Meta Accounts Center, not from an individual conversation. Request the smallest complete archive that covers the period you need, then preserve the ZIP unchanged.
Request Instagram messages
The current flow is called Export your information.
- Open Instagram and go to Profile › Menu › Settings.
- Open Accounts Center (some interfaces say Meta Account).
- Choose Your information and permissions › Export your information.
- Tap Create export and select the Instagram profile.
- Choose Export to device.
- Select Specific types of information and choose Messages, or choose all available information if you need broader account context.
- Set the date range, format, notification email, and media quality.
- Tap Start export and complete any password check.
Meta sends an email and Instagram notification when the file is ready. It says preparation may take up to 30 days. The completed export is available in Available downloads for four days, so download it promptly. Keep the received ZIP and notification email.
JSON or HTML
JSON is the better source for a structured transcript. It stores message objects and machine timestamps that software can sort and render. It is not pleasant to print directly. HTML is easier to open in a browser but is less convenient for reliable parsing and custom output.
For a dispute, request JSON and retain the ZIP. If useful, request HTML separately for human review rather than converting or replacing the JSON yourself. Select All time when completeness matters. A custom date range can make a smaller file, but the archive then says nothing about messages outside that range.
Find messages in the ZIP
Meta’s archive layout has changed over time. Common JSON exports place threads below a path resembling your_instagram_activity/messages/inbox/<thread>/message_1.json; older exports may use messages/inbox. Long conversations can be split across message_1.json, message_2.json, and further numbered files. Media is stored in related folders and referenced by relative paths.
Treat those as common layouts, not a guaranteed current contract. Search the extracted archive for message_1.json and inspect the containing thread folder. Do not discard numbered continuation files. Keep filenames and folder structure intact so media references still resolve.
Message objects commonly contain a sender name, millisecond timestamp, text content, and references to photos, videos, audio, shares, or reactions when available. Features differ by conversation and export generation. A missing field does not prove that an event never occurred.
Why emoji can look garbled
Some Instagram JSON exports have represented UTF-8 bytes as escaped Latin-1 characters. The result can look like ð instead of an emoji, or turn accented names into strings such as José. The message is not necessarily damaged; the viewer may be interpreting the encoded bytes incorrectly.
Do not run a blanket search-and-replace over the evidence file. Preserve the original JSON. The Instagram and Facebook to PDF tool detects the known encoding pattern and repairs text for display while retaining the source archive. Processing happens entirely in your browser, and files are never uploaded. Check names, emoji, and several messages against Instagram before relying on the PDF.
Deleted and unsent messages
An Instagram download does not restore unsent messages. Meta’s deletion help explicitly says exported information will not include messages you have unsent. Meta may temporarily retain some deleted information for safety or backup purposes, but its export help says that information will not appear merely because it is retained.
That distinction matters: platform retention is not user access. If a message is important and still visible, preserve it now. Capture its surrounding context and account identity in addition to requesting the archive. Never claim a blank export proves a message never existed.
Instagram encryption changed in 2026
Instagram no longer supports end-to-end encrypted messaging as of May 8, 2026. This directly contradicts older guides that describe Instagram DMs as currently end-to-end encrypted. Instagram says affected users will see instructions to download media or messages they want to keep and may need to update the app first.
Follow those in-app instructions for any affected older encrypted chat. Do not assume the ordinary Accounts Center package contains every item from a formerly encrypted conversation. Preserve both downloads separately and document their source.
Make a printable record
Start from the untouched ZIP, not copied text. Convert the JSON locally, state the display time zone, and compare the output with the archive and live conversation. Keep both sides of exchanges, not only favorable messages. If media matters, verify that each displayed attachment opens from the preserved folder.
The resulting PDF is a readable presentation copy. Keep the ZIP, download notice, screenshots of account identity, and notes showing when and how you requested it. For disputes, the preservation guide and screenshots versus exports guide explain why these materials complement each other.
Choose the export settings deliberately
Each setting changes what the archive can establish. Select the correct Instagram profile first, especially if Accounts Center contains several Facebook and Instagram profiles.
| Setting | Practical choice | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Information | Messages | Keeps the request smaller while including DM data |
| Date range | All time | Avoids an accidental cutoff; use a shorter range only when you can document it |
| Format | JSON | Preserves structured message records for conversion |
| Media quality | High when attachments matter | Affects archive size and the quality of included media |
| Notification email | An address you control | Preserves the ready notice and helps you retrieve the file promptly |
Meta’s interface may say Accounts Center or Meta Account during its gradual renaming. Follow Your information and permissions › Export your information, then Create export › the Instagram profile › Export to device. Do not choose transfer to another service unless that added copy is intentional.
Download every archive part if Meta splits a large request. Record the requested range, format, and media quality before leaving the setup screen. When the notification arrives, save it with the untouched download and note the download date.
Read message_1.json without changing it
The JSON file is a structured list, not a ready-made transcript. A thread commonly includes a participants list and a messages array. Within a message, sender_name identifies the displayed sender, timestamp_ms is a millisecond machine timestamp, and content carries text when text exists. Other objects can point to photos, videos, audio, shared posts, calls, or reactions.
Not every message has every field. A photo-only DM may have a media reference but no content; a reaction can be attached to another event; a shared post can later become unavailable. Long conversations may continue in message_2.json and higher-numbered files. A converter must combine those files in timestamp order without treating the filename number as the message chronology.
The field descriptions above reflect commonly observed Meta archives, not a fixed public schema promised by Meta. Preserve unfamiliar fields and the complete directory. If a parser does not recognize an object, report it as unsupported rather than dropping it without notice.
Distinguish vanish mode, unsending, and deletion
Temporary and removed Instagram content can disappear for different reasons. Vanish-mode material is designed to disappear after it is seen and the chat is closed. An unsent message is removed from the conversation, and Meta expressly says it is not included in the data download. Deleting a conversation from your own inbox also does not create a recovery route through Export your information.
Those outcomes should not be collapsed into “deleted messages.” Preserve a visible message before changing chat settings, but do not interfere with another person’s account or device. If a notice remains in the live interface, capture the notice and surrounding context separately. The archive’s silence cannot identify which mechanism caused an absence.
Message requests can also create gaps in expectations. A request may sit outside the main inbox, and an account can be renamed, disabled, or removed. Check the live Messages and story replies areas and request the All time range, but do not claim that every historical request must appear. Meta’s help pages confirm export categories, not a complete field-by-field guarantee for every request state.
What the 2026 encryption change means
Instagram’s primary help page says end-to-end encrypted messaging is no longer supported as of May 8, 2026. It tells affected users that they will see instructions for downloading messages or media they want to keep, and that older app versions may need an update. The page does not say that every formerly encrypted item automatically moved into the ordinary Accounts Center archive.
End-to-end encryption and downloadable history are separate questions. The end of Instagram’s optional encrypted messaging does not make an old export more complete, restore unsent items, or prove who controlled an account. If Instagram offers a special affected-chat download, preserve it separately from the Accounts Center ZIP and label each source. Do not merge their files into a new “original.”
Convert an Instagram thread step by step
The free Instagram and Facebook to PDF tool runs locally in the browser, so the selected archive is never uploaded. Use a working copy and retain the ZIP exactly as downloaded.
- Download all parts and place them in one case folder without altering their internal paths.
- Open the tool and select the Instagram ZIP or supported JSON files.
- Choose the intended conversation and review participant labels.
- Confirm the display time zone and inspect messages around daylight-saving changes.
- Compare accented names, emoji, attachments, reactions, and the first and last dates with Instagram.
- Download the PDF, record the conversion date, and keep it beside the original archive.
If café becomes café, or an emoji beginning with ð becomes readable, treat that as a display correction. The source JSON must remain unchanged. Mention the correction in acquisition notes if the exact rendering matters.
Prepare Instagram messages for a dispute
A useful record connects content to an account and explains collection. Capture the profile page, username, profile URL if available, conversation heading, and relevant message request state. Keep enough earlier and later messages to show what each reply refers to. Save original media and note any unavailable shared posts.
Preserve the request confirmation, notification, ZIP, converted PDF, and a short chronology of your steps. A screenshot can show what the app displayed; JSON can supply structured timestamps and a broader range. Neither alone proves that an account holder personally authored every line. The authentication guide explains the kinds of surrounding facts that may help, and the court guide explains general evidence handling. Follow the rules and directions for your forum.
Troubleshoot an incomplete download
Most apparent omissions come from the selected profile, category, range, or archive part. Return to Your information and permissions › Export your information and verify each choice rather than editing the downloaded JSON.
If a conversation is absent, check that you selected the Instagram profile rather than a linked Facebook profile and chose Messages. If older messages are absent, request All time. If media is missing, verify that all ZIP parts were downloaded and that the relative folder structure remains intact. If the export is still being prepared, wait for Meta’s notification; repeated requests can create several similar archives that are easy to confuse.
If an item was unsent, expired, or is no longer available, a new request may not change the result. Document the limitation and preserve lawful supplementary screenshots. Never use a third-party service that asks for an Instagram password merely to turn JSON into a PDF.
Limits worth knowing
- The export is not a way to recover unsent messages.
- Folder names and archive layout can change; locate message files rather than relying on one fixed path.
- A short date range omits older messages even if they remain in Instagram.
- JSON is better for conversion but may display emoji and accented characters incorrectly in unsophisticated viewers.
