The best app to print and export text messages: what to look for
Apps that print and export iPhone texts work in very different ways. Some read your messages directly; some rebuild them from screenshots. Here is how to tell them apart before you start.
Short answer
The best text export app reads your messages directly instead of from screenshots, puts a sender and time on every message, never lets anyone change the text, lists photos it could not include, and shows every price before you start. Text Exporter is built around all five. Without an app, a Mac can print a conversation from Messages for free.
The ways to get texts off an iPhone, side by side
| Way | Works on the iPhone alone | How messages get in | Sender and time on every message | Original text stays locked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Screenshots, then Print | ✓ | Pictures of the screen | ◐Only what was on screen | ✓ |
| Messages on a Mac | ✕Needs a Mac | The Mac's own synced copy | ◐Time markers between messages | ✓ |
| A Shortcut you build yourself | ✓ | Apple's Messages actions in Shortcuts (iOS 26) | ◐Apple does not document the fields | ✓ |
| Apps that read screenshots | ✓ | Screenshots or a screen recording, read by text recognition | ◐Recognized from images; can be misread | ◐Often editable, to fix recognition errors |
| Text ExporterOurs | ✓Texts, yes; Telegram and encrypted Messenger chats are exported on a computer | Shortcut for Messages; the exports WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Telegram and LINE make. No screenshots | ✓Read from the app's own records, each time labelled by how exact it is | ✓Names, redactions and notes sit in a separate, listed layer |
Text Exporter is not released yet; its row describes what it is being built to do.

What to check before you pick an app
- Does it read your chats directly, or rebuild them from screenshots? Look for which apps it imports and how.
- Are senders and times read from the source, or recognized from images? Recognition can put a message under the wrong person.
- Can you preview the export before paying, or only after the work is done?
- Is every price shown before you start, and does a plan renew?
- Can message text or times be edited? A record anyone can change is harder to rely on.
- Are photos and attachments included, and does the export say when one is missing?
- Where does processing happen? Look for "processed on our servers" in the description, and read the App Privacy label.
Courts decide what they accept. Under Federal Rule of Evidence 901, the person offering a record must show it is what they say it is, often through someone with knowledge of the conversation. A good export supports that; it does not replace it.

Questions people ask
Why do screenshot apps get senders wrong?
They guess who sent each bubble from its position and colour in an image. A direct import reads the sender from the message record.
Is there a free way to print texts from an iPhone?
Yes, with Messages on a Mac (File › Print) or screenshots. Both take more checking, and screenshots may not show each message's time or the phone number. See how to print iPhone texts.
Will Text Exporter work without a computer?
Yes. It will import Messages through a Shortcut and WhatsApp from its export file, all on the iPhone.
Does Text Exporter upload my messages?
No. Everything is processed on the iPhone. Files leave the phone only when you share them.
